Dodge Cove LNG

Dodge Cove is one of the smallest unincorporated communities in British Columbia, with just 29 full-time residents. Located on Digby Island, a short skiff ride away from the north coast city of Prince Rupert, there are no paved roads, automobiles, or shops here.

In September 2015, Dodge Cove residents voiced concerns about the proposed construction of a $28 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility by Aurora LNG, a joint venture between Nexen Energy and INPEX Gas British Columbia.

The project would violate recommendations by the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators that all LNG operations keep a 2.2-mile minimum hazard-free zone from nearby communities.

Though demolition on some of the island's older buildings had already begun, in September 2017, Aurora LNG was canceled due to market pressures.
