Fairbanks, Alaska is a desert. Snowfalls are few and far between in the Interior. Instead, locals have long relied upon freezing temperatures to keep their winters white. But 2016 was the warmest in recent memory. Ice bridges thawed out. Wildfires ignited in February. And drunken forests were a bit tipsier than usual as permafrost lurched under-root.
